Discovery Bottles

Sensory play is one of the most important developmental tools that we can provide for our infants and toddlers.  Sure they get a lot of sensory play and exposure from everyday life, but a little concerted effort never hurts either.

I don’t consider myself much of a DIYer usually, especially with that popularity of Pinterest, my little projects are just put completely to shame.  But not in the eyes of a 15 month old.  He doesn’t know pinterest and I am mommy and therefore the most amazing person ever anyway!  So I can DIY for Ike.

And I do.

Sensory Bottles

I made him a few discovery bottles around Christmas time.  Nothing fancy, I seriously found all of these things in my craft box and in the pantry.

Tools:

  1. Small Water Bottles – I used 8oz Kroger brand ones because that is what I had leftover from a party.
  2. Glitter
  3. Sequins
  4. Olive Oil
  5. Light Corn Syrup
  6. Hot Glue Gun

Bottles:

  • Glitter and Water

  • Corn Syrup and sequins

To seal the bottles from my little Houdini I screwed the lids on after placing a thin bead of hot glue around the edge.

I do. And I Always Will.

It’s our Anniversary today.

Danielle & Isaac Wedding-244

Two years ago today, I promised to love unconditionally, this man, for the rest of my life.  Two years later and not much has changed, but yet, everything has changed.  Our family has grown, our jobs have changed, our relationship has deepened.  But we are and will forever be together in love.

Danielle & Isaac Wedding-123

Danielle & Isaac Wedding-103
O
ur last moments apart before being joined for eternity.

Our wedding day was the happiest day of my life.  It was the day I got to marry him.  It was also the best party I’ve ever been to.  And it was the day we decided to bring Ike into the world.  I wouldn’t change a single moment of any of it.  None of the stress of planing, the rain in the morning, each and every guest that we shared the day with.  Nothing.  It was all perfect.

Danielle & Isaac Wedding-341

On our first anniversary, we were a little over-committed, and over-whelmed with a three month old baby Ike and two conflicting parties.  This year, Ike is older and we are more adept to the parenting thing.  And I’ve not planned 35 activities to squeeze into this particular day.  Today is for Isaac.  Isaac and Danielle.  Everyone else will just have to wait.

The second anniversary is traditionally the ‘cotton’ year.  Cotton should make for pretty easy gift giving right?  Not really, not for a person with approximately 4,000 t-shirts.  Or a person who is completely unaware of the sheets they sleep on.   A person that just received socks for Christmas, lol.  So I got Isaac a cotton tie and pocket square.  I hope he likes it, he’s a pretty big tie person.  I mean just look at the pimp bow-tie he wore on our wedding day!

Danielle & Isaac Wedding-116

Happy Anniversary my Husband.  May there be many many more.

Play Date

Ike had a play date this weekend at Imagine It! Children’s Museum.  Our buddy baby Ethan joined us.  Although Ethan will be turning one in just a few short weeks, I guess we will have to stop saying “baby” Ethan.  Both of these boys are getting so big!  I was on my own for this play date, so all I have are crappy blurry photos taken with my phone.  Managing to corral Ike in a huge open play ground and trying to take quality photos with a real camera is much more than I am capable of.

Ike seems to have a thing for driving.  Thinking about it for a little while, I guess I should have picked up on this by now.  He’s always enjoyed sitting in the driver’s seat on my lap and pretending to drive.  See?  And he had a very loud toy with a steering wheel that he enjoyed in passing.  Just long enough to make it start up with all the lights and noises that went on forever.  I consigned that toy at first chance.

But at the museum, there was a really Mini Cooper with the doors removed (and I assume some other non-child-safe parts) to sit and play in.  He loved it.

IMAG00165

Ethan seemed to be a happy accomplice to whatever Ike was plotting.

He loved it so much that he had a royal fit as soon as I took him out to give some other kids a turn.  He made it his mission to drag me back to that car all afternoon.

We tried a truck.

IMAG00148
No thanks.

We tried a tractor.

IMAG00174
Nope.

He was somewhat intrigued at the pretend food area.  He chose fruit cocktail, a piece of asparagus, and a taco as his meal.

IMAG00147

Mostly he used the asparagus as a fork though.

Kim chose 6 Sanity Saving Tips for Busy Moms from The Sunny Patch. “I am ALWAYS trying to find the “best” way to enable me to do it all – and usually failing miserably. Like Tonia says, sometimes there are things that you just need to let slide off the burner completely in order to take care of the items that are the most important. I absolutely love the analogy “eat the frog” because that’s one of my pitfalls – putting off those tasks that HAVE to be done in favor of doing something that I WANT to do (housework v. blogging). If I “eat the frog” and just get the nasty over with – then I have more time to spend on doing what I love to do. It’s a concept that I preach to my two boys on a daily basis, yet I have trouble doing it myself. This was my most favorite post this week and “Eat the Frog!” is now taped to my computer monitor as a reminder to get the yuck done and out the way so I can do the fun stuff!”

Valentine’s Day 2015

Happy Half Off Chocolate Day!  Just kidding, that would be the old cynical me talking.  Yesterday was the big, hearty, red holiday that I used to hate, never missing an opportunity to make a snide comment about the Hallmark Holiday’s origin.

How’d I celebrate this year?  With my kids and my husband doing all things pink, red, and heart shaped.  Naturally.  What?  Who hates Valentine’s Day?  No one, especially not me.

It started with breakfast.  Pink, heart shaped, chocolate chip pancakes.  Did I cover everything cliche in that sentance?  I think so.  Adorable right?

Pancakes are more or less a staple in my house on the weekends.  These were made with Pomegranate juice and pureed strawberries in lieu of red food coloring to keep them “Ike friendly”.  I just used the combo of fruit juices in place of the water in the “just add water” pancake mix.  And sprinkled in chocolate chips while they cooked on the first side.

Then there were these gems that I saw on Turn it up Tuesday by Fry Sauce and Grits.

I made them for the girls.  Ike is still a little small for that amount of sugar (he got enough from the pancakes) so he settled for a balloon.  That he has been dragging around the house since yesterday morning.

Then we went for an ever so romantic trip to Ikea to buy Ike a kid-sized table and chair.

Later that evening, Isaac and I went to the Melting Pot for dinner, just the two of us.  The cheese and chocolate fondues were both amazing.  I can’t wait to go back.  Then we made a reservation at the ‘lazy boy’ movies (AMC Phipps) for 10:15. I fell asleep at about 8.  So, in conclusion, I totally won Valentine’s Day, but I was much too exhausted to enjoy it.

Is it all Coming to an End?

Anyone out there who knows me, like in real life, knows I’ve been complaining and whining about the hassle of nursing/breastfeeding for several months now.  And even before that, I was very much looking forward to leaving pumping and expressing milk at work when Ike turned one.  I want to be done with nursing. I want to have wine with dinner.  I want to retire the clickable nursing bras to the attic.  I’m so over it.

Well, Ike seems to be starting to wean. And I am devastated.  I know what I said.  And I think I meant it, I really do want to be done.  But the actually finishing makes me sad.  This wonderful roller coaster ride of a journey may be coming to an end.

the end

Ike’s totally fine going to bed with a bottle of cow’s milk.  He sleeps exactly the same.  He will accept a bottle instead when he wakes up during the night (yes that still happens).  He’s pretty much indifferent and I think that I have been unconsciously continuing despite him.  There’s been only once in the past two or so weeks that he differentiated to me that he would prefer to nurse over taking a bottle at bed time.  I obliged with no hesitation, but I think I could have urged him on back to the bottle with little resistance.  And this morning he asked for milk, and maybe he would have accepted a bottle, but at 4:45am, I’m thinking convenience.

For a while I wanted to keep going until he started school.  But I figure now is as good of time as any.  Especially since I don’t intend to continue very far into him beginning school.

Honestly, I am not sure what I am waiting for.  I did want this to happen.  I wanted to stop, but I also wanted him to want to stop.  Both seem to be happening, so why I am having so much trouble letting go?
